Are you curious about Machine Learning but don't know where to start? Do you like meeting new people and learning new things? Then you've come to the right place!

Pink Programming presents an online Intro to Machine Learning course. Teacher-led lessons will be combined with hands-on programming tasks—all to give you the best possible programming start.

Pink Programming’s summer coding camps are dearly loved among their participants and new friendships have been forged every summer for the past five years. We don’t want to pass on this despite this year’s theme of social distancing. We will offer online summer courses that are unlike anything you’ve seen before! 

During the camp, we will mix things up with fun social activities like cook-alongs, yoga, and games. You will also meet female developers, who will tell you about their journeys and be available to answer all of your questions.

About the camp


Intro to Machine Learning is a camp focusing on the basic algorithms of supervised and unsupervised machine learning. Workshops will deal with hands-on and small end-to-end projects using the popular Python library scikit-learn. 

We will guide you through the steps of training and evaluating different machine learning models using multiple datasets. Our goal is to inspire and give you a good foundation to continue learning more about the field. The camp is perfect for you who wants to take your first step into the world of machine learning.

Before, in between and after the coding sessions there will be the opportunity to do online yoga together, watch movies together, cook-along and listen to inspirational talks from the teachers and mentors. Despite being online, the camp will be a social occasion to learn together with others and get a network within the Machine Learning field.

For each day of the camp, we will be programming approximately between 9 am and 4 pm. Both before and after there will be other social or recreational activities to do.

Prerequisites

To get the most out of the camp it is great if you have basic knowledge in Python or a similar language. Basic knowledge includes variables and data types, lists, dictionaries and for loops, conditional statements and functions. It's also nice, but not necessary, if you know Pandas, matplotlib/seaborn, classes and objects.

If you do not meet the requirements, don’t worry. Then we suggest you to prepare by going through a tutorial before the camp. There are plenty of tutorials on the internet, so choose your favourite one or take a look at Codecademy or Udacity.

Expected learning outcomes

  • A basic introduction about machine learning concepts (e.g. supervised vs. unsupervised) and solve some problems using Python.
  • Real world application of ML
  • Intro to classification algorithms and application with Iris data and classifying breast cancer tissue

  • Regression algorithms and application on predicting wine quality and advertising sales based on social channels

  • Getting familiar with clustering algorithms for discovering unknown patterns in data

  • ML ethics such as responsibility and explicability of ML models

    • We recommend this camp for those who are curious about machine learning
    • We welcome all women-identified, whether they are girls, aunts, ladies, cis or trans. Our camps are also open to those who do not identify themselves as women but, because of gender identity, do not feel represented among programmers.
    • Your computer must have audio and video capabilities, and you also need access to a reliable Internet connection.

        Which language will the class be in?

        Lectures will be held in English. We will be able to provide explanations and help in Swedish.

        Head teacher

        Myky has been a part of Pink Programming since 2015 and has since then arranged multiple programming camps and workshops for women. Her dream of changing the tech industry has made her dedicated to encourage more women to code. 

        During the camp she will teach, help and support you as much as you need to reach your goal of building your machine learning projects. She is currently working as a machine learning engineer at H&M and is so looking forward to sharing this experience with you.

        Code Mentor

        Jun has been a member since 2019 as a code mentor, a sponsor recruitment group for the Sundays events in Göteborg, and a nominating committee. Seoul and California are her hometowns and she moved to Sweden in 2018. 

        She is currently working as a Data Analyst at AKQA with work experience in data engineering (python/sql/r), data analysis, data visualization, and business intelligence for automobile and FMCG industry. She loves yoga, brewing, nature and above all inviting girls to learn programming fearlessly with curiosity.

        Can
        Code Mentor

        Can has been a member of Pink since September 2019. She is from China and she studied her master in Embedded and Intelligent system at Halmstad University. Then she moved to Gothenburg and worked at a company called Smart Eye as a software developer for eye-tracking methods. 

        Currently, she is working as a software developer at Volvo Cars in the Interior Light department. She wants to share what she has learnt from school or work with more girls who are interested in this area. She loves nature, snowboarding, meditation and talking to different people.

        Camp Leader

        Sara is a statistics and informatics student at Lund University with a background in political science. She loves the Pink camps and have organized and attended several of the past ones - however this will be her first digital one! 

        She’s excited to prep you with all the practical details, make communication work smooth and help everyone get to know each other during the camp. She loves silly games, pasta, Friends and the complexity of responsible and ethical AI.
